Jeff Bezos net worth 2019: Is the Amazon CEO still the richest person in the world after divorcing wife Mackenzie? How much is his new house worth?

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has just purchased a luxury mansion penthouse in New York, according to reports.

And whilst the $80 million (£63 million) price tag may seem eye-watering for us regular folk, it’s probably a drop in the ocean for Bezos, who holds the title of world’s richest man.

Located in the upmarket neighbourhood of Flatiron, Manhattan, the three-story property boasts a 24-hour concierge, golf simulator, fitness centre, screening room and game room.

Despite the 17,000 square-foot space, the billionaire will most likely be moving into his new abode alone, since announcing his divorce from wife Mackenzie in January.

In April, the pair released separate statements announcing they had “finished the process of dissolving” their marriage.

Shortly after their divorce was announced, it emerged that Mr Bezos was dating TV presenter Lauren Sanchez, although sources persist that the relationship did not start until their marriages had ended.

Here’s everything you need to know about the man behind one of the world’s most successful companies:

What is Jeff Bezos’ net worth?

The couple made the announcement on Twitter

In July 2018, Bezos was worth $150 (£118.2) billion making him the richest man on earth since at least 1982, when Forbes first began their billionaire list.

His net worth then soared to $160 (£126) billion in February 2019 after Amazon surpassed Microsoft to become Wall Street’s most valuable company.

Whilst his net worth was expected to decrease post-divorce, Forbes’ latest estimate values Bezos at $143.4 (£113) billion.

This still makes Bezos the world’s richest man, surpassing Bill Gates whose net worth is an estimated $101.1 (£79.6) billion, according to Forbes.

How did Jeff Bezos make his money?

Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 when it began as an online bookshop before selling a variety of different products, and it ended-up taking on established retail giants such as Walmart.

The company has since continued to diversify and grow, through acquisitions such as Whole Foods and services such as Amazon Web Services.

Under Bezos, Amazon also launched the Kindle e-reader and revolutionized the way books are distributed and read. The company has also been a pioneer in cloud computing.

At the end of 2015, the e-commerce company announced 304 million active member accounts.

In 2018, Amazon’s stock soared by 60% and had a market value of more than $890 billion.

Bezos is the largest shareholder with a 16% stake in the company. He also personally owns the Washington Post and Blue Origin, a space exploration company.

Who is his wife, Mackenzie Bezos?

Jeff Bezos and former wife Mackenzie Bezos

Novelist Mackenzie Bezos married Jeff in 1993 before they both quit their jobs and relocated to Seattle to found Amazon.

Mackenzie, 48, grew up in San Francisco and attended Princeton University, before she met her husband when interviewing for a job at a New York hedge fund.

She was one of the first ever Amazon employees, doing the accounting for the company in the first year. Her husband would later comment that her support was instrumental in founding the company.

He said of Mackenzie: “I think my wife is resourceful, smart, brainy and hot, but I had the good fortune of having seen her resume before I met her, so I knew exactly what her SATs were.”

Is MacKenzie Bezos still one of the richest women in the world?

The couple have four children together and are the 25th largest landowners in the US.

Mackenzie became one of the richest people in the world following her divorce from Bezos, with her personal fortune now worth an estimated $36.6 (£28.8) billion.

Just months after her divorce, she promised to give at least half of her fortune to charity.

She said in a statement announcing her decision: “I have a disproportionate amount of money to share.

“My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”

Bezos praised his former wife’s decision.

“Mackenzie is going to be amazing and thoughtful and effective at philanthropy, and I’m proud of her,” he said on Twitter.

Why did the couple divorce?

According to the Twitter statement, the couple decided to divorce after a long period of “living exploration” and “trial separation”.

Bezos wrote: “We want to make people aware of a development in our lives.

“As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.

“We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.

“We’ve had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures. Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends.”
